Ratcliffe Lea
Masterplan | Urban design
The brief for this project was to transform the former coal-fired Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station into a model for future living. The proposal frames Ratcliffe Lea as the UK’s first “forest town”—a settlement structured by forest logic, not just planted with trees. Density is used to protect and extend a continuous landscape, while movement, water, and urban form are shaped by ecological systems. Existing hedgerows and woodland expand into a connected mosaic, integrated with a site-wide SuDS network of wetlands and floodable spaces. This blue–green framework supports biodiversity, manages flood risk, and defines daily experience. These principles translate into a compact, walkable neighbourhood where green infrastructure, shared streets, and mixed housing create a coherent, socially active place embedded in its landscape.
